[edit] Summary
From Stage 3 Media's website:
- Stem cells, gene therapy, transplants, cloning… The very meaning of the word “humanity” changes daily in the modern world. But there is a darker side to the evolution of mankind, a truth only a few brave souls are willing to face:
- There are monsters loose in the world. And they are the key to the future of our race.
- Each webisode of Sanctuary follows the exploits of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis) as she seeks out all manner of terrifying and monstrous creatures. She is aided in her quest by her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne, Dawson’s Creek, The Big Hit, Species 3) and her intrepid, if somewhat reckless, daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup, Battlestar Galactica). Together they will be drawn into a frightening and mysterious world populated by beings that defy explanation.[1]
[edit] Technical aspects
Sanctuary is the first series to be filmed on tapeless high definition, where footage is directly shot to hard drives, instead of being converted from film. The series is shot extensively with greenscreen, which, according to Stage 3 Media, makes Sanctuary "we are the first series-based, non-feature project to shoot extensively on greenscreen"[1].
To date, a few notable movies that have been mostly shot on greenscreen include Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sin City, and 300.
Unlike the above theatrical movies, the series uses a 3D computer-model tracking system that allows both actors and directors to see the computer generated set in real-time.[1]
Each episode is split up into various parts called "webisodes". For instance, the 2 hour pilot is considered eight webisodes[1] with roughly 15 minutes of content.
